9. South American Rattle Snake :
South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) often referred as Tropical rattlesnake, is one of the most venomous snakes of the world. It belongs to the family of pit- viper and regarded as the deadliest snake of South America. They are responsible for 9% of the deaths due to snake bites in Latin America. With many venomous snakes teeming in South America, it is considered most dangerous of all due to its nasty deposition with potent toxic venom and its habit of striking without a sign of warning. It geographical range spreads throughout the South American continent except Andes mountains in discontinuous manner. They are broadly distributed in Southern Mexico, Central America and from Brazil to Argentina. preferring habitats are sandy places, savannas, plantations, dry hill slides and semi- arid zones.
South American rattlesnakes are stout with an average length of 1.5 meters(4.9 ft) and can barely reach 1.9 meters(6.2 ft). Coloration of this snake varies throughout its range mostly varying from light to dark brown. Vivid, distinct stripes can be observed starting from the base of the head. Being nocturnal, these snakes are more active during the night for hunting and hiding till the sunset. These snakes feed on small mammals, lizards, occasional birds and pre-killed rodents in rainforest areas.
This species of snake boasts the most lethal venom than any other rattlesnakes. As its name suggests, these snakes have high irritable deposition. It bites without giving a signal. The venom possesses potent nuerotoxic and hemotoxic which attack the ocular nerves and can lead to permanent blindness and progressive paralysis. Damage of tissues is great in this case. Other symptoms may include impaired vision, auditory disorders, damage to skeletal and heart muscles, bleeding, hypo tension or shock. With proper medical treatment, fatalities can be greatly reduced.
